1 EU and UK Discuss 120M Barrel Diesel Release to Avert US Export Ban 🛢️ Commodity Sep 29, 12:24 PM EDT 113/34
Officials from the European Commission and the governments of France, Italy, Ireland, and Britain are holding emergency calls to organize a joint response regarding the mobilization of fuel inventories. The discussions follow reports that the Trump administration has demanded the European Union release 120 million barrels of emergency diesel over six months or risk a US ban on diesel exports. While the US urges immediate action to curb global fuel prices, Germany's economy ministry has stated that no new requirements for reserve releases have been issued by the International Energy Agency.
The tension arises as U.S. diesel hit a record $6.53 per gallon last week, creating pressure on Washington ahead of November midterm elections. Europe has become increasingly dependent on American fuel after banning Russian imports and facing Middle East disruptions. Washington claims France and Germany failed to fulfill reserve release pledges made in March, while European nations hold nearly 95% of the 225 million barrels in OECD strategic middle distillate inventories.
