An unknown power outage forced the shutdown of Exxon Mobil's Joliet, Illinois refinery, removing 11 million gallons of daily fuel production from the market. Great Lakes spot gasoline prices rose 35.5 cent per gallon and diesel spot prices climbed 22.5 cent per gallon on the first deal following the outage. U.S. diesel prices crossed $6 per gallon following the disruption, which is expected to impact fuel costs in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Power has been restored at the 275,000 barrel per day facility, but units are still being stabilized after the plant-wide shutdown. Normal service is not expected until the end of the week while technicians perform damage assessments and reheat units. The cause of the power loss remains under investigation.
