The European Commission is reviewing the legal framework to push back monitoring requirements for oil, gas and coal imports after resistance from member governments. An official source stated that the goal is to postpone key provisions of the 2024 methane emissions regulation by 1 year, which would shift the date the rules enter into force from 2027.

Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen plans to present the proposal before a meeting of EU leaders on Oct. 15. Commission staff are currently working at a technical level to determine which specific parts of the regulation will be deferred.
