1 Moldova Approves 60 Day Energy and Water Emergency After Drone Incursions 🛢️ Commodity Sep 22, 1:52 PM EDT 12/4
A vote of 54 members of Moldova's Parliament authorized special powers for the management of fuel and power resources to accelerate acquisition and distribution. The state of emergency takes effect September 26 and lasts for 60 days, granting authorities the ability to prioritize energy imports and temporarily restrict exports from strategic reserves. Government officials stated the measures allow the state to intervene before supply disruptions affect critical infrastructure and households.
The decision follows a warning from President Maia Sandu regarding the vulnerability of the nation's energy system to hostile actions. Parliament debated the order for more than five hours, with Deputy Doina Gherman citing a need for cheaper gas and protection from Russian drones. Under the new rules, the state can also mobilize alternative power sources and pumping equipment to address water shortages in the Prut and Dniester basins.
