The International Monetary Fund forecasts an economic contraction of more than 8% for the energy exporter this year as the Strait of Hormuz remains largely obstructed. Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani confirmed in an interview that the state has lost $24 billion in gas sales since the war with Iran began and faces a budget deficit following a missile strike on an LNG facility. Tourism has also collapsed, with international visitor numbers falling approximately 80% from March 2025 to March 2026 and hotel vacancies reaching about 60% during the conflict.

QatarEnergy has extended force majeure on liquefied natural gas shipments to Asia and Europe through November, with deliveries to Italy's Edison SpA remaining suspended until early December. The operator has shipped only 18 LNG cargoes in the current period compared to 509 a year earlier. The company notified customers in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and at least one Indian buyer that shipment cancellations remain in place due to ongoing energy flow disruptions in the Persian Gulf.
