Firefighters in the Al-Shola region have shut off the flow to a damaged fuel line to allow internal gas pressure to dissipate before they can quench the remaining flames. This intervention follows a powerful explosion on Sept 28 near the Iraqi border that tore through a transmission pipe in Deir ez-Zor. The Syrian Petroleum Company reported that the fire continues to burn as crews wait for the fuel trapped in the isolated section to exhaust.

The outage has cut gas deliveries from the Jbeissa plant to domestic power stations, disrupting the electrical grid. The Syrian Oil Company attributed the blaze to an act of sabotage that targeted a shut-off valve in the east of the country. Emergency teams from the state news agency and petroleum company are continuing efforts to fully extinguish the fire.
