βΆIndiana prosecutors have charged five Indianapolis police officers with fraud and misconduct for allegedly misusing their access to the Flock license-plate-reader surveillance system. The charges follow an investigation by The Washington Post that uncovered thousands of questionable searches and led to the suspension of one officer. In a separate development, the city of Boston disabled all of its Flock cameras after discovering that the system's data was available to law enforcement agencies nationwide.
The US Senate held a hearing on Tuesday to examine Flock's nationwide AI surveillance network and data-sharing practices, though the company's executives did not attend. A cybersecurity researcher testified that a lack of multi-factor authentication allowed Russian vendors to sell police accounts on the dark web, while a woman testified she spent 13 days in jail due to a wrongful accusation based on Flock data. An Arizona sheriff also testified about terminating his county's contract with the company to protect Fourth Amendment rights.
