India and Pakistan Trade Diplomatic Summons After Arabian Sea Naval Collision

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned India's Chargé d'Affaires on Sept 16 to protest a "provocative and unacceptable" act by an Indian Navy vessel. This follows a summons from New Delhi after a collision between warships in the North Arabian Sea on Sept 15. Indian officials alleged the Pakistani vessel violated a 1991 bilateral agreement requiring 3 nautical mile separation by approaching at high speed in an "unprofessional and unsafe manner."

The Pakistan Navy was conducting a biennial exercise at the time of the encounter, and the foreign ministry claimed an Indian ship performed aggressive maneuvers in its exclusive economic zone. India's Ministry of External Affairs reported the collision occurred in international waters about 220 km east of Oman and caused no major damage to its vessel. Unconfirmed reports from Indian sources indicate the Pakistani ship PNS Hunain returned to port with damage.
