Iranian lawmakers have filed an impeachment motion against Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over contacts with US officials that they allege were unauthorized, parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission member Ali Khezrian said Thursday. Khezrian said Araghchi must appear before parliament after returning from his trip and explain “on what basis this conversation with the American side took place.”

The move follows criticism from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Tasnim News, which reported Wednesday that Iran’s policymaking bodies had not authorized Araghchi’s contact with US envoy Steve Witkoff. Tasnim cited Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei as saying the approved plan allowed Araghchi only to convey Iran’s seven conditions through mediators.

President Donald Trump said US representatives held three hours of talks with the Iranian delegation Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Witkoff later described the discussions as indirect, with mediators shuttling between delegations. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Iran conveyed its conditions through a Qatari mediator, including an end to war on all fronts, the naval blockade and economic warfare, and the release of Iranian assets.
