Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the U.S. to handle relations with Taiwan with caution and seek a diplomatic end to the Iran conflict during talks at the White House on Thursday. Xi urged Washington and Tehran to return to a June agreement, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resolve nuclear issues through negotiations. These meetings are part of a three-day state visit that began with President Donald Trump greeting Xi on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday.

Trump and Xi agreed to extend their existing trade truce until Jan. 10, 2027, to avoid immediate tariff escalations while they address disputes over AI guardrails, technology curbs and rare earth minerals. The summit marks the first official U.S. state visit by the Chinese president since 2015. Trump's personal airport reception was a rare gesture, the first time a U.S. president has welcomed a visiting leader on the tarmac since John F. Kennedy greeted the UK prime minister in 1962.
