The United States will ban Russian and Chinese military personnel and strategic investments on Greenland as part of a new defense pact signed in New York. President Trump and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland signed the agreement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, securing permanent security rights for the US and authorizing the construction of two new military bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The deal also expands the Pituffik Space Base and allows for the deployment of the Golden Dome missile defense system to protect against ballistic threats.

The pact preserves Danish sovereignty over the island, ending a monthslong standoff over previous US efforts to annex or purchase the territory. As a condition of the deal, Greenland must remain a member of NATO even if it achieves independence from Denmark. The agreement also requires US contracts for construction and maintenance on the island to be awarded to Greenlandic suppliers to the maximum extent possible. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the accord, though local reaction in the capital city of Nuuk remains mixed.
