President Donald Trump and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland signed a trilateral security agreement at the UN General Assembly granting Washington permanent security rights on the Arctic island. The pact authorizes the construction of two new military bases in southern and eastern Greenland, specifically at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and expands the existing Pituffik Space Base. Under the terms, adversary nations are barred from establishing military footholds or investing in strategic sectors without U.S. written consent.

The deal concludes a months-long geopolitical standoff while preserving Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-rule. In exchange for the expanded U.S. footprint, the agreement mandates that contracts for construction and services be awarded to Greenlandic firms to the maximum extent possible. Greenland also agrees to remain within NATO if it achieves independence in the future, ensuring the U.S. maintains long-term access to the mineral-rich territory.
