1 UK PM Andy Burnham May Campaign to Rejoin EU in Next Election 🌐 Geopolitics Sep 29, 10:07 AM EDT 74/32
The British government is considering a reversal of Brexit by exploring the possibility of regaining full membership and potentially adopting the euro during the next general election. Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced at the Labour party conference that he will lead a review of European policy to find consensus on a long-term relationship with the bloc, an approach he described as going "all the way." Options for this a new a framework range from maintaining the current arrangement to joining a customs union or the single market.
Burnham will present these options at a UK-EU summit later this year, arguing that Brexit has "done more harm than good" and hampered economic growth. This shift is a U-turn from Labour's 2024 manifesto, which explicitly ruled out rejoining the single market or customs union. French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez welcomed the prospect of a British return, while any formal policy change would be included in the party's next manifesto, with the next election up to 3 years away.
