US and Iranian delegations exchanged messages through mediators at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, with Tehran presenting conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump said the discussions lasted three hours and called them “very productive.” US envoy Steve Witkoff later described the talks as indirect, with mediators shuttling between the delegations, and said mediation would continue.

Iran conveyed its demands through a Qatari mediator, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said. They included an end to the war on all fronts, US military action, the naval blockade and economic warfare, as well as the release of Iranian assets. Earlier Tuesday, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could reopen Hormuz within seven days if Washington eased military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports. The proposal was delivered through mediators on Sept. 16.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also met Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on the assembly’s sidelines, criticizing Paris for “interventionist stances.” Trump said another US-Iran meeting was scheduled “in the very near future.”
