US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Iran’s delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday that President Donald Trump said lasted three hours. Witkoff clarified that the discussions were indirect, with mediators shuttling between the delegations. Trump called the meeting “very productive” and said another was scheduled in the near future. Witkoff said mediation would continue.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Tehran conveyed its conditions through a Qatari mediator, seeking an end to war on all fronts and a halt to US military actions. “Iran’s conditions also included an end to the naval blockade and economic warfare, as well as the release of Iranian assets,” he told state news agency IRNA. Iranian state television said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi participated to deliver Tehran’s terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier Tuesday, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran could reopen the strait within seven days if Washington eased military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports. The proposal was delivered through mediators on Sept. 16. In his UN address, Trump predicted a deal after November’s US midterm elections while also threatening to “annihilate the Islamic Republic.”
