US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held three hours of talks with Iran’s delegation in New York on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said, calling the discussions “very productive” and saying another meeting was scheduled soon. Iranian state media confirmed Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s participation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Witkoff later described the talks as indirect, with mediators shuttling between the delegations, and said mediation would continue.

The talks followed Trump’s General Assembly speech threatening Iran while predicting a deal after November’s US midterm elections. “Do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy again?” he asked. Trump also urged other nations to economically isolate Iran and reiterated that he would not allow it to acquire a nuclear weapon.

Iran conveyed its conditions through a Qatari mediator, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said. They included an end to war on all fronts, US military action, the naval blockade and economic warfare, along with the release of Iranian assets. Earlier Tuesday, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington eased military pressure and lifted its port blockade. That proposal reached Washington through mediators on Sept. 16. Brent and US crude futures fell more than 1% after an earlier Kyodo report on the offer.
