President Donald Trump signed a trilateral security pact with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The agreement grants the US permanent security control over the Arctic territory and authorizes the construction of 2 new military bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, as well as the expansion of the Pituffik Space Base. The deal deploys the Golden Dome missile defense system to the island and bans military presence or investments in critical minerals by non-NATO adversaries without written consent from Washington.

Greenland will remain under Danish sovereignty and is required to stay within NATO even if the territory achieves independence. The pact, which has no expiration date, resolves a monthslong standoff following Trump's previous attempts to annex or purchase the island. In exchange for the expanded military footprint, the US will prioritize Greenlandic suppliers for construction and maintenance contracts to maximize local investment and employment.
