US negotiators rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if its demands were met within a week during indirect talks in New York, Axios reported. American officials told Tehran it did not control the strait and questioned its leverage over reopening it.

Iran’s terms, conveyed through a Qatari mediator, include lifting the US naval blockade, ending the war on all fronts and economic restrictions, releasing frozen Iranian assets and accepting a shipping route agreed with Oman, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said. Traffic has continued through Hormuz: TankerTrackers estimated crude shipments through the strait at 10.35 million BPD on Sept. 23.

Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei also threatened neighboring countries that restrict Iranian flights under US sanctions. “If neighboring countries go along with the United States in stopping Iranian flights, their airports won’t be able to work,” he told state television, without specifying what action Iran might take. Washington has threatened sanctions against countries that allow Iranian flights after Wednesday.
