French Fiscal Watchdog Labels 2027 Budget Cut Targets a Minimum
▶

The High Council of Public Finances warned that official projections of economic growth are too optimistic to reliably meet fiscal targets. France's budget watchdog described the government's current plans to reduce the deficit as a "minimum" effort, cautioning that the nation's overall finances remain "alarming." Finance Minister Lescure has established a 5% deficit goal for 2027, supported by a total fiscal adjustment of €54B, 60% of which is targeted at spending cuts.

The budget draft, presented by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, has led local mayors to warn of difficulty maintaining essential services under the planned restrictions. Meanwhile, student protests over classroom overcrowding and teacher shortages have spread across the country, leading to hundreds of detentions. These austerity measures follow mounting concern among international investors regarding the sustainability of French debt, contradicting administration claims of strong creditworthiness.
