IonQ Demonstrates First Real Time Quantum Error Correction on Standard CPUIONQ

Benchmark circuits simulated 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5M quantum operations with only a 0.02% increase in processing time. IonQ's decoder achieved this by managing a real-time error correction process on a standard off-the-shelf CPU that runs continuously in the background without pausing quantum execution. The company claims this is the industry's first end-to-end solution of its kind.

The results are based on simulations for a proposed architecture requiring 11,680 physical qubits. This development is part of the company's Walking Cat architecture roadmap toward systems that can control thousands of qubits. By utilizing conventional CPUs, IonQ aims to scale its quantum hardware without adding massive amounts of additional classical computing resources for decoding.
