The electric vehicle company is currently deploying its Optimus V3 robot iterations internally for training and data collection to refine autonomy before leasing them to external customers. Production has increased roughly ten times in recent months to reach several hundred units per week, utilizing a repurposed Model S/X assembly line at the company's Fremont factory. Tesla managers are targeting a weekly capacity of more than 1,000 units by year end, serving as a step toward an ultimate goal of 20,000 robots per week.
Manufacturing hurdles persist in the robot's intricate hands, which contain over 100 screws and components that still require manual assembly, according to The Information. The scale-up is further complicated by quality constraints from suppliers and reliability issues with touch sensors. To address performance gaps, Tesla has collected more than 500,000 hours of task-specific training data and aims to double that volume by the end of the year.
