Senator Josh Hawley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, launched an investigation into Flock Safety's AI powered surveillance network. The Missouri senator demanded documents regarding data access, camera placement, and contracts with local governments, as well as every known case of misuse since 2021. Flock operates more than 120,000 cameras across 49 states that conduct over 20 billion vehicle scans every month.

Hawley stated that Congress never authorized the national database created by the company, which pools captured data for customer searches. The investigation follows reports of a Florida woman spending 13 days in jail because of a misread license plate and misuse of the system by Missouri police. Flock claims its cameras have helped locate 10,000 missing people.
