DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin issued a statement denying that Perez received inadequate medical care and noted his work permit expired in 2025. Federal law enforcement sources stated the ICE officer involved in the encounter was not wearing a body camera, despite a promise from ICE leadership to equip all agents with the devices by the end of August. Perez remains in federal custody at an ICE processing facility in South Texas.
