▶CNN reporter Betsy Klein's press pass was seized and MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner was denied entry on Saturday as the White House enforced President Donald Trump's ban on the two networks and Politico. Reporters from all three outlets have been denied access. Their lawyers are working through next steps, with legal action likely in the coming days, Brian Stelter reported.
Trump announced the ban on Friday, effective immediately, accusing the outlets of reporting “FICTION and LIES” and threatening to bar others. Gardner said an officer told her that her badge had been disabled and asked her to hand it over. An MS NOW producer was allowed entry even as a reporter and photographer were turned away.
The outlets say the restrictions violate First Amendment protections by limiting access based on coverage. “The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can't ban others because it doesn't like their reporting,” said Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz defended the ban during a CNN interview Sunday, saying: “The president is absolutely within his rights to limit journalists to government facilities.”
