CNN reporter Betsy Klein and MS NOW correspondent Akayla Gardner were denied entry to the White House and had their press passes confiscated Saturday, a day after President Donald Trump announced a ban on their outlets and Politico. An MS NOW photographer was also denied access, though a producer for the network was allowed inside.

Gardner said her badge did not work when she arrived. “The officer asked me to hand over my badge. He said that it was disabled. I asked why I was not able to get inside. He said it was above him.” MS NOW vowed to defend its First Amendment rights.

Trump announced the ban Friday over the outlets’ coverage, saying it was effective immediately. Asked to justify it, he said: “Because they're fake news. There may be others to join them.” Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, called such a ban “flatly unconstitutional,” saying the White House cannot admit some journalists while barring others because it dislikes their reporting. Politico said it would continue covering the administration and defend its First Amendment rights.
