US Supreme Court Denies Final Appeal for First Tennessee Female Execution in 200 Years

The death sentence of Christa Pike will be carried out this Wednesday following the failure of her last legal bid to stay the proceedings. The US Supreme Court blocked the 50 year old inmate's most recent petition on Monday, removing the final barrier to the state's plan. If carried out, Pike will be the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, with the last such event occurring in 1820.

Governor Bill Lee previously denied a bid for clemency, maintaining the execution date for the only woman currently on death row in the state. Pike was 18 in 1995 when she helped kill a classmate in a jealous rage. In recent statements, Pike cited mental illness as a driver for her crimes and claimed a kinship with convicted murderer Lindsay Clancy.
