The White House denied two CNN journalists access to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s return for a state dinner Thursday after trying to dictate which types of journalists the network could send, CNN said. MS NOW journalists were also barred from covering the arrival. The White House defended the restriction, saying, “This is a pre-credentialed event,” and that journalists do not have “free rein into every part of the White House, every event, and every press call.”

The exclusions came hours after CNN, MS NOW and Politico regained access to White House grounds under a court order. Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14 day temporary restraining order blocking Trump’s ban on the outlets, finding they were likely to succeed in showing their credentials were revoked without “constitutionally adequate due process.” Journalists were initially turned away Thursday morning, prompting the outlets to request an emergency hearing before they were readmitted.

Access to the grounds remained separate from participation in the television pool. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News had not filmed Trump and Xi’s events earlier Thursday while awaiting assurance that CNN could fulfill its pool duties. Trump accused CNN and MS NOW of refusing to cover Xi’s earlier arrival, saying “they refused to be there,” and said the media would attend the evening’s state dinner.
