The White House restored press pool access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after initially continuing to bar their journalists despite a court order halting President Donald Trump’s ban. US District Judge Timothy Kelly blocked the ban for 14 days, finding the outlets were likely to succeed on their claim that their credentials were revoked without “constitutionally adequate due process.”

Reporters from all three outlets were turned away Thursday morning, prompting an emergency request for a court hearing before they regained access to the grounds around midday. Access to individual events remained contested: the White House later barred two CNN journalists and MS NOW journalists from covering Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival for a state dinner. CNN said officials had tried to dictate which type of journalists could attend. The White House’s rapid response account defended the restriction, saying, “This is a pre-credentialed event.”

Restoring credentials did not immediately resolve the separate dispute over television pool coverage. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News had withheld pool coverage while awaiting assurance that CNN could fulfill its future pool duties. The pool had not filmed Trump and Xi’s events earlier Thursday because that assurance had not been provided.
