The White House assigned Real America’s Voice to CNN’s pool slots for President Donald Trump’s Thursday trip to Texas and Oklahoma, including cameras aboard Air Force One covering both rallies and at the White House. CNN had been scheduled to cover the president on behalf of the five major television networks.

ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News declined to substitute for CNN, leaving the shared network TV pool inactive despite Real America’s Voice’s assignment. The White House print pool warned that this would make live streams of Trump’s comments harder to obtain and said the administration would stream his events and remarks. The network pool has operated normally on days assigned to networks other than CNN.

Judge Timothy Kelly’s Sept. 24 order restored White House press credentials for CNN, MS NOW and Politico for 14 days on due process grounds. Their lawyer, Ted Boutrous, argues that the order also covers pool duties and accused the White House of continuing an unconstitutional “ban on the free press.” A new supporting court brief drew 77 media organizations, up from 49 in the previous brief.
