Russian Drone hits Shut down First targeted Major Bridge in Kyiv

The Pivdennyi Bridge across the Dnipro river remains shut to all vehicle and subway traffic after a wave of drones hit the roadway and support beams on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Russian drones, including Geran-5 jet-powered models, struck the crossing multiple times, targeting the upper span and supporting pillars. The Russian Defense Ministry officially confirmed the hits, which have paralyzed transport between the right and left banks of the capital, forcing some Kyiv residents to walk across crossings to reach their workplaces.

The attacks mark the first time since the start of the conflict that Russia has targeted major bridges in Kyiv. Munitions used reportedly featured new cutter charges and cumulative warheads designed specifically to damage infrastructure supports. These strikes were part of a larger assault involving 108 drones, 88 of which were neutralized by Ukrainian defenses. One man was killed and at least 15 people were injured after a separate missile hit a 25 story residential building in the Darnytskyi district. The closed bridge typically serves as a strategic link between the capital and highways to Odesa, Chop, and Kharkiv.
