1 Saudi Arabia Says It Intercepted Houthi Drone Targeting Mecca ⚔️ War Sep 16, 6:15 AM EDT 186/49
Saudi air defenses destroyed a drone south of Mecca on Tuesday before it entered restricted airspace around Islam’s holiest city, the Saudi-led coalition said, accusing Yemen’s Houthis of targeting the city. A Houthi official rejected the Saudi account as “a worn-out lie.”
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki said the coalition would take deterrent measures against further attacks and described the incident as the second Houthi attempt to target Mecca, citing a ballistic missile launch in July 2017. The coalition called the security of the two holy mosques a “red line.”
The Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan and Kuwait condemned the alleged attack. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged restraint and dialogue to prevent further regional escalation, while Turkey’s Foreign Ministry called for an immediate halt to the attacks and reaffirmed support for Saudi sovereignty and security.
