Russia's Ministry of Defense intercepted 1,110 Ukrainian drones across 19 regions and Crimea on Sept 20, surpassing the previous annual high of 822 in August. The overnight assault targeted the Kapotnya oil refinery in Moscow and the Sofyino logistics park during the final day of the country's parliamentary elections. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported damage to the refinery facility, while at least two civilians were killed in the Moscow region.

Strikes on the Kapotnya plant likely damaged two primary distillation units, ELOU-AVT-6 and Euro+, which together represent 100% of the refinery's primary processing capacity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky identified the use of long-range systems including Flamingo cruise missiles and Pelican drones to disrupt sites supporting the Russian war machine. The operation triggered fires at the refinery and forced 400 evacuations from a residential building in Ramenskoye.
