Ukraine has begun work on reserve crossings, and construction of several embankment dams with pontoon crossings begins next week, Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said Oct. 3, after repeated Russian drone strikes disrupted traffic across Kyiv’s bridges. Ukrainian lawmakers have also discussed using ferries or temporary pontoon bridges if any of the capital’s bridges are destroyed, the BBC reported.

A Russian drone struck Kyiv’s Northern Bridge on Saturday, damaging the roadway and severing trolleybus power lines. Traffic toward the right bank of the Dnipro was temporarily halted while crews assessed the span. The attack followed four strikes on the Southern Bridge on Thursday and Friday that left it closed to road traffic and metro services, contributing to large traffic jams.

Russian attacks across Ukraine killed at least six people, while Moscow said it would continue “mass retaliatory strikes” on Kyiv and other cities. President Volodymyr Zelensky said residential buildings, railways and energy infrastructure came under attack overnight, and a drone struck a vessel in Chornomorsk. “The Russians continue to turn our infrastructure and everything that supports ordinary life into their targets,” he said.
