The aerospace force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps intercepted a U.S. Army reconnaissance aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The MQ-1 drone was shot down by an integrated air defense network during a period of heightened tension in the waterway.

The Iranian military stated that the U.S. resumed use of the MQ-1 after the destruction of numerous MQ-9 drones. The downed aircraft had 20,000 flight hours over Afghanistan and had been retired from the U.S. Navy and Air Force for several years before returning to service. U.S. Air Force aircraft are currently operating in the region.
