First responders in the heart of the Ukrainian capital are recovering victims from the rubble on Sept. 28 following an aerial assault. A Geran-5 drone struck the National Academy of Sciences in the Shevchenkivskyi district, killing at least one civilian and igniting a blaze that forced some occupants to jump from windows to avoid being burned. Rescue teams are continuing to search for survivors trapped inside the building while working to extinguish the fire.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the fatalities and stated that the research facility was part of a broader wave of strikes against civilian infrastructure. Other attacks on the same day hit a pharmaceutical company and gas stations in Kyiv, a business center in Dnipro, and communications hubs in other regions. Zelensky warned that Russia would face a response for these targets, which he described as an act of terror.
