Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv overnight, hitting residential areas and energy sites and cutting power in parts of the capital, in a further escalation of a multi-day assault on the city. Ukraine deployed interceptors from two defense systems, and drones continued to approach the capital as the threat persisted.

The missile barrage followed a wave of drone attacks on Monday that killed two people and injured 26 in Kyiv. A jet-powered drone destroyed the National Academy of Sciences in the city center, killing one person and injuring six, including three children, with staff escaping through third-floor windows as the building burned. A second drone struck the Dobrobut medical center, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported 19 injured across the capital. Across Ukraine, Monday's raids killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 80, also hitting an oil terminal near the Polish border. Volodymyr Horbulin, 87, one of Ukraine's leading political scientists, was wounded in the academy strike and his assistant was killed.

Zelensky said the casualties could have been prevented with tougher measures against Moscow, calling for pressure on "everything that finances and produces Russia's weapons of terror, and on everyone who uses them." Macron condemned the strike on the academy, France's embassy said, saying France and Europe would stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary.
