The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported a new ship was targeted on September 30 in the waterway's southern corridor, bringing the total to five vessels hit since September 28. The latest incident follows three "time-late" notifications of tankers struck on September 29, including one LNG carrier and two crude oil tankers. This surge follows an earlier strike on September 28 against the Al Funtas, a very large crude carrier managed by the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company that caught fire but remained underway with its crew safe.

Regional monitors and the Iranian state media agency Fars News attribute the wave of strikes to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which describes the targets as ships violating navigation instructions. The Iranian Armed Forces also stated they engage in daily clashes with US forces in the area. While the UKMTO has listed the projectiles as unknown, analysts have identified suspected drones and missiles, and satellite imagery showed a large bright spot about 31.5 km east of Khasab, Oman, coinciding with the attacks.
