Ukraine intercepted 60% of the ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv in Thursday’s Russian attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky said as he announced a deal for a new package of Patriot air defense missiles at the UN General Assembly. The overnight strike killed two people and injured at least eight in the capital. Zelensky also sought a winter air defense package in talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte, saying Ukraine needs Patriot interceptors “practically every day.”

Three waves of ballistic strikes hit Kyiv, damaging homes, warehouses and a maternity hospital. Patients and staff were unharmed in the hospital’s shelter. Across the overnight attack, Russia used 282 drones alongside ballistic and hypersonic missiles, Ukraine’s Air Force said, reporting 227 aerial targets destroyed or suppressed. Separately, a Russian strike on a farm in Stara Hnylytsia in the Kharkiv region killed six workers and injured 12.

Airspace incursions also occurred in neighboring Romania and Moldova during the overnight attacks. Romania scrambled two F-16s after a drone crossed from Ukraine and crashed near Solca, with no casualties or damage reported. Moldovan authorities reported four aerial objects entering from Ukraine and temporarily suspended flights in the country’s north. Teams investigated an explosion near Cernița, where no casualties were reported.
