The US armed forces utilized a government-specific version of Elon Musk's Grok AI to identify targets and coordinate attacks during the war with Iran, a US official told Time. Known as Gov Grok, the system was integrated into active combat operations to deploy military assets and execute strikes in that conflict, moving the AI's role beyond purely strategic consultation.

The operational use of the chatbot follows a December 2025 clandestine meeting in the Oval Office where President Donald Trump questioned the AI on the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. After Grok predicted that Venezuelans would celebrate the downfall of the repressive dictator, Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro the following month and later described the AI as ingenious.
