Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the United Nations that Ukraine would strike back if an energy truce with Russia cannot be reached before winter, a day after discussing the proposal with US President Donald Trump. He warned that the coming winter would be deeply “painful” for Russia without an agreement.

After Tuesday’s meeting in New York, Zelensky offered to halt attacks on Russian energy sites if Moscow reciprocates. “We are ready for an energy ceasefire if they do not attack our energy system, our electricity, heating, and water supply,” he said, adding that Washington would convey the proposal to Russia. Trump had pressed him in a Sunday call to stop attacking Russian refineries over concerns about a global diesel shortage and rising prices, the Financial Times reported. US diesel averaged a record $6.51 a gallon, according to AAA.

Zelensky said Russia had used more than 2,100 missiles against Ukraine since the start of the year, including more than 950 ballistic missiles, along with 63,000 attack drones, of which more than 7,700 were jet-powered Shaheds. Kyiv has requested a winter package of Patriot missiles and US licenses to produce them in Ukraine. He also accused North Korea of sending troops to support weaknesses in Russia’s army, asking, “WHY SHOULD KOREANS GIVE THEIR LIVES IN A WAR AGAINST UKRAINE?”
