Investigators Say Flydubai Suspect Likely Acted Alone

Investigators examining the Flydubai cockpit attack say the suspected co-pilot met with religious figures and are probing possible identification with al Qaeda ideology, Israel’s Channel 12 reported. Their working assessment remains that he acted alone, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu investigates whether anyone directed the attack.

Israeli investigators are expected to question the Omani suspect in the UAE, which is leading the investigation, Reuters reported. He was transferred there after the Sept. 30 Dubai to Tel Aviv flight diverted to Saudi Arabia. Passengers and crew subdued the co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain and trying to crash the aircraft, while a reserve pilot crew landed it safely. Flight data showed a descent rate of about 544 feet per second at its steepest point.

Captain Smit Machchhar, recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital, told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his 17 years of flying experience, including 11 as a captain, helped him recognize the aircraft was descending while he lay wounded on the cockpit floor. He opened the door to let others intervene. “I was being assaulted at that time; I just opened the door and all the others came; all of them too had an equal role,” he said.
