An Israeli official said the Omani co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain and trying to crash Flydubai Flight FZ1073 had social media accounts showing jihadist radicalization and references to killing Jews. The official also said the suspect asked Emirati crew members to kill him after he was subdued aboard the Dubai to Tel Aviv flight.

“He talks about killing Jews,” the official said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu separately said the suspect underwent “Islamist radical indoctrination” and that authorities would be able to determine within days whether he had connections to Iran. Israel will participate in the UAE investigation, the official said. The motive remains under investigation, a spokesman for Netanyahu’s office said.

The aircraft, carrying 174 people, landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after passengers and crew overpowered the suspect and additional pilots aboard took control. Indian Captain Smit Machchhar opened the cockpit door despite his stab wounds, enabling the intervention, Netanyahu said. India’s ambassador to the UAE said Machchhar was recovering and in good condition. Passengers subsequently reached Israel on a replacement aircraft, and Flydubai suspended flights to and from Israel during the investigation.
