New education rules in Italy will prohibit face coverings in schools and establish a legal limit on how many foreign students can be enrolled in a single class. The proposed legislation requires parents of foreign students with integration problems to take Italian language lessons and specifically bans the wearing of burqas and niqabs. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that equality between men and women is non-negotiable in the country's educational institutions.

The center-right government's proposal aims to counteract the growth of the ultranationalist National Future party. Speaking at a party youth event, Meloni argued that high concentrations of students who do not speak the local language lead to marginalization and abandonment rather than integration. The measure seeks to ensure Italian children do not feel like a minority in their own classrooms.
