Meloni Limits Foreign Students and Bans School Burqas to Curb Nationalist Surge
▶

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is introducing government rules to prohibit the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools. The proposal establishes a legal cap on the number of foreign students allowed in each classroom and mandates Italian language lessons for parents of students with serious school-integration problems.

The center-right government is implementing these education laws to counter the political growth of the ultranationalist National Future party ahead of next year's general election. Meloni stated that high concentrations of students who do not speak the local language lead to marginalization, asserting that equality between men and women is non-negotiable in Italian classrooms.
