The government of Serbia has transferred the leadership duties of the presidency to Ana Brnabić, making her the sole person in the nation's history to have occupied the roles of prime minister, speaker of parliament, and president. Brnabić, who is openly lesbian, becomes the first head of state in the Balkans to be openly gay. She assumed the acting role on Sept. 27 following the resignation of Aleksandar Vučić, who is shifting his political focus from the head of state to the parliamentary branch.

Vučić has served as president since 2017 and will lead the Serbian Progressive Party into snap parliamentary elections on Oct. 25 to seek the prime minister's office and avoid constitutional term limits. He informed Vladimir Putin of his decision during a telephone call on Sept. 26. This political transition occurs as the 'Students Win' movement continues nearly two years of protests against corruption and a deadly railway station collapse, while a formal presidential election must be held by the end of the year.
