Emergency services in Strasbourg responded to fires at the Jean-Geiler-de-Kaysersberg high school on Tuesday as violence spread throughout the national education system. In Lyon, pupils launched pyrotechnic mortars at riot squads, while other clashes in cities including Lille and Bordeaux led to the arrest of a teacher on long-term sick leave for assaulting a police officer.

Law enforcement reported more than 1,000 detentions over two days, a sharp increase from an initial count of 440 reported by the interior minister, as disruptions hit hundreds of campuses. The unrest stems from grievances over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and planned 2027 budget cuts, as well as overheated buildings following recent heatwaves. These school blockades coincide with nationwide strikes by firefighters and other public sector workers ahead of next year's presidential election.
