PM Lecornu Orders Crackdown on French Student Riots
🌍 World Sep 29, 6:02 AM EDT 25/13
High school pupils in Lyon fired pyrotechnic mortars at riot police as unrest spread across hundreds of campuses throughout France. Prime Minister Lecornu ordered a crackdown on the violence, which has seen students set fire to rubbish bins and throw projectiles at security forces in cities including Lille, Bordeaux, and Marseille, in addition to blocking entrances at schools in Saint-Denis.
The disturbances, which led to at least 440 detentions including many minors, stem from grievances over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and planned budget cuts for 2027. The unrest coincides with a nationwide strike by civil servants, including firefighters and teachers, as the country prepares for a presidential election next year.
