At least 1.7 million people across Thailand have been impacted by severe flooding, with an estimated 700,000 residents and 329,000 households affected in Bangkok. Total damages throughout the country have reached $327 million, and the death toll has risen to 18 people across Thailand and Myanmar, where dozens remain missing in the south. While floodwaters in the capital are receding, authorities have issued new evacuation orders for an eastern province where reservoirs are swelling.

The crisis followed five days of heavy precipitation, including nearly 300mm that fell in Bangkok over a 48 hour window. Government officials declared all 50 districts of the capital as disaster zones and granted civil servants a two-day holiday to facilitate recovery and reduce traffic congestion. More than 10,000 troops were deployed to assist in evacuations as thousands of residents sought refuge in temporary shelters.
