Bangkok authorities have ordered a two-day holiday for civil servants to facilitate cleanup and reduce traffic congestion as floodwaters finally begin to recede. While the city has started to drain its saturated canal systems, the Thai government reported on Monday that overall rainfall since mid-September has claimed eight lives across the country.

More than 10,000 soldiers have been deployed to the capital to rescue stranded residents, and approximately 4,900 displaced people are currently in temporary shelters. The deluge, which delivered nearly 300mm of precipitation in 48 hours, impacted roughly 52,000 households and caused an estimated $320M in damages. All 50 Bangkok districts were declared disaster zones, forcing the suspension of government offices and the postponement of official macroeconomic data.
