Approximately 700,000 residents of Bangkok were impacted by a deluge that overwhelmed the city's drainage systems and left major roadways submerged. The Thai Health Ministry reports that drowning and electrocution caused at least 19 deaths across 23 provinces as torrential rains hit the country. Authorities designated all 50 of Bangkok's districts as disaster zones after nearly 48 hours of heavy precipitation inundated homes and businesses.

Nearly 12 inches of rain fell in some areas, falling as a month's worth of precipitation in a single weekend. To facilitate recovery and reduce traffic, the government declared a two-day special holiday for civil servants, closed public offices and postponed economic data releases. Over 10,000 troops were deployed for evacuations, with officials establishing temporary shelters for approximately 4,900 displaced persons as waters begin to recede.
